Project Awards

All project entries must demonstrate a commitment to net zero, the Building Safety Act and collaboration. Open to manufacturers, contractor and, consultants.

Indoor Air Quality, sponsored by Nuaire

This category recognises a project or series of projects that have made a significant contribution to the health, well-being, and productivity of building occupants by working to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). This could either be through exceptional work in one project, a series of projects, or through an innovative technical development or practice. 

Key areas that the judges are looking for: 

  • You should be able to describe the nature of the project(s) and how you believe it/they has/have improved the outcome for building occupants/clients.
  • Provide details of the problems you encountered, how you assessed and addressed the IAQ challenge and what innovations were used. It might also be helpful to explain what standards you worked towards and why.
Over 500K

Open to all UK projects with a budget value over £500K, that achieved practical completion, or equivalent, between Jan 2023 and Jan 2024. This category celebrates the best of building services, and the entry should reflect that.

Key areas the judges are looking for: 

  • Entries should demonstrate how net zero has been considered
  • They should also be able to provide evidence of how the requirements of the Building Safety Act were considered and implemented
  • They should also provide details of health and safety performance as well as competence and compliance
  • Showcase how best practice and innovation has been used
Under 500K

Open to all UK projects with a budget value over £500K, that achieved practical completion, or equivalent, between Jan 2023 and Jan 2024. This category celebrates the best of building services, and the entry should reflect that.

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Entries should demonstrate how net zero has been considered
  • They should also be able to provide evidence of how the requirements of the Building Safety Act were considered and implemented
  • They should also provide details of health and safety performance as well as competence and compliance
  • Showcase how best practice and innovation has been used
Retrofit

Open to all retrofit or refurbishment projects completed by Jan 2024. This category is designed to showcase the crucial role played by building engineering improvements and upgrades in addressing comfort, health & wellbeing, and carbon reduction.

What are the judges looking for:

  • The judges will be looking for evidence of how this project demonstrably improved the performance of an existing building or facility and met the goals of the client and occupants. This could include progress towards net zero, better health and wellbeing outcomes, energy/cost savings – or all of the above!
Net Zero

Judges are looking for projects or organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to the UK’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This commitment can take the form of delivering a project with strong net zero credentials, producing an innovative technology, process or methodology that advances net zero, or a wider initiative such as developing training or addressing corporate culture.

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Reduction of emissions through design and construction measures, leading to reductions both in the build and operational phases of assets and demonstrating progress towards net zero.
  • Use of sustainable materials and achievement of waste, materials and water efficiency performance during construction, through design and construction innovation.
  • Assets which evidence their environmental performance matching or exceeding the design modelling and ratings.
Competence and Compliance (BESA Member only)

This Award will recognise a company that has demonstrated a drive towards competence and compliance within the building services sector.

Key areas the judges are looking for:  

  • Judges will want to see examples of robust processes such as a CAS Audit, HIU certification etc.
  • They will also want to see the accreditations achieved by the nominee such as BESA membership, ISO, CHAS, ConstructionLine, Investors in People etc.
  • Please also include any audit processes used by the company.
  • Your commitment to the training, skills and development of your people to ensure competent and compliant individuals

 

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Open to companies who have introduced initiatives that help promote diversity and inclusivity, such as ‘neurodiversity’ or thinking differently. You should describe the specific project(s), initiative or service that demonstrate support and promotion of diversity in the building services sector. Please give examples of success and provide data to support your entry.

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Describe the specific project(s), initiative or service that demonstrates their support and promotion towards diversity within the building services sector. Please give examples of success and provide data to support your entry.
  • Evidence should include examples of initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion and shows commitment to attracting diverse talent.
  • The judges will also be looking for evidence showing progress being made on sites, offices, and branches towards improving inclusion in all its forms.

  

New product or technology

This category is open to innovative new products and emerging technologies that provide solutions to existing market needs. The product must have been available on the UK market since January 2024.

The entry must demonstrate that the product or emerging technology meets the appropriate UK building regulations and health and safety standards. 

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • The entry should be able to demonstrate how carbon reduction was considered from the outset and built into the project design; what techniques and technologies were used to achieve operational and embodied carbon reduction; and how the project team met its goals including best practice installation, commissioning, and ongoing operation.
Learning and Development Initiative

This award is for an employer who has started, developed or culminated an outstanding training initiative over the past year.

Key areas the judges are looking for:  

  • What was the initiative about 
  • Who delivered the initiative 
  • Why did you introduce the initiative - recruitment, upskilling or contractual obligations 
  • Did it involve establishing apprenticeships within your company 
  • Was training provided to support apprenticeships 
  • Did the initiative improve efficiency and productivity of your workforce 
  • What percentage of the workforce was trained 
  • What was your return on investment?
Training Provider (BESA Member only)

Why do you think your training is the best? Please provide evidence to support you claims and give examples of how you worked collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for trainees, employers and the wider industry.

Key areas the judges are looking for:  

  • What scope of training / assessment does your organisation provide
  • How many learners have benefitted from your training?
  • What do learners and / or employers say about your training
  • What sets your operation apart from other training providers?
  • What new training initiatives have you brought in?
  • What are your future plans?
Contractor of the Year

This category seeks to recognise the most outstanding contractor across a range of disciplines.

Key areas the judges are looking for: 

  • Details on the size and value of the job. 
  • Details of the scope of work. 
  • Examples of client management and collaboration directly related to the contract. 
  • How you coped with any challenges faced on site.
  • How you upheld the BESA standards of membership and used BESA member companies wherever possible throughout the lifespan of the job.
  • Contact details of a referee for reference. 

Presidents Award for Outstanding Achievement

The President will select someone who has made a significant contribution to the industry outside of their regular work.

Rising Star (BESA Member only)

This is for a rising star who has been in the industry five years or less. Your nominee must have shown innovative thinking, a significant contribution to a project or otherwise demonstrated their ability to rise to the top. Entrants must be able to demonstrate how, specifically, they have made a difference to their projects or business.  

The Manly Trust Management Training Bursary (BESA Member only)

This award is open to any apprentice currently working for a BESA member who shows a high level of promise and would, in the opinion of their employer and the judging panel, benefit from additional training to develop management skills that could equip them for a senior role in the future

The successful nominee will be fully funded by the Manly Charitable Trust to undertake a management course assessed by BESA and the Trust as suitable for meeting the aims of the award and the needs of the successful candidate.

Apprentice Awards

These awards highlight the skills of deserving apprentices. Show the industry their talent and give them the recognition they have earned by nominating today. All awards will be judged via a one hour online test that will take place during the 5 - 15 July.

We have an exciting opportunity to run our RACHP award category with WorldSkills UK, which will mean each nominated apprentice will have the chance of winning two awards, the BESA Industry Award and a WorldSkills UK Award! Entries will be submitted via the WorldSkills UK competition website and be automatically submitted into the BESA RACHP Award. As well as the online test (which will run between the 16th & 23rd April) all successful candidates will be invited to take part in a practical round before the 28th June. The registration deadline for this category is a little different, in order to align with WorldSkills UK, so therefore please ensure registration is before the 28th March.
