BESA received the following advice from the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy in relation to the classification of key workers:
The guidance on key workers is supposed to be interpreted flexibly, and to include all those working son projects that support key services. So this would include the NHS, food distribution, utilities etc. What we are advising is that firms should issue workers with a letter explaining what they are doing – although they only need to do this if they need a school place.
The definition of key worker does not at this point do anything other than give someone the ability to request a place in a school if they need it and it is available. It should not be interpreted as having any implications beyond that at this stage. Please do relay that to everyone who raises this. At this point, the key workers list certainly shouldn’t be viewed as a licence to work.
