LEV is an engineering control system to reduce employee exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace by capturing the emission at the source and transporting it to a safe emission point or a filter.
Every year thousands of workers in the UK develop occupational diseases from breathing in certain dust, fumes or other airborne contaminants at work. Effective LEV or dust/fume extraction can carry these away before they can be breathed in.
TR40 A GUIDE TO GOOD PRACTICE FOR LOCAL EXHAUST VENTILATION
A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FOR EVERYONE THAT DESIGNS, COMMISSIONS, OPERATES AND MAINTAINS LEV SYSTEMS.
TR40 supports the principles of the government’s ‘Helping Great Britain Work Well strategy by providing simple, accessible and relevant advice to facilitate proportionate, appropriate and effective risk management, encouraging all those in the system to take much greater ownership of health and safety and ultimately help Great Britain work well.
All people involved in frontline LEV activities such as Sales, Design, Installation, Commissioning & Testing should consider becoming members of ILEVE to demonstrate their accredited LEV competence in their field of expertise. Accredited fields of expertise will be displayed on membership competency cards to prove personal competence and include:
Principles of Occupational Hygiene
Thorough Examination and Test
10 reasons why you should consider ILEVE membership
Professional Certification - The ILEVE membership designation FILEVE, MILEVE, AILEVE etc. would give me a credential giving others evidence of my demonstrated knowledge and skills.
Professional Confidence and Competence - I am working with an increasingly diverse set of sectors, substances, legislative requirements, and membership to give me access to training, information, and guidance.
Networking with other industry professionals - As a Member, I would interact with other LEV professionals via an international & regional structure, conferences and training etc. Sharing, learning and expertise.
Up to date Information - The Institute would provide me with details and best practice advice on legislative changes from a centralised resource for all matters relating to local exhaust ventilation via e-mail, newsletters and the monthly CIBSE journal.
Distinguish Yourself Professionally - LEV Engineering has been recognised as a profession that can strongly influence the health of the working population. Participation in ILEVE programs will help reduce the levels of industrial ill health and premature death by working to an approved Code of Conduct, adopted standards, and the wider community's ongoing education.
Members can strengthen their leadership skills by - mentoring colleagues, serving on committees, participating in the many proposed activities and projects, becoming certification assessor and contributing to ILEVE publications.
ILEVE Guide - It is the Institute's intention, along with CIBSE and others, to produce and maintain the definitive guide to Local Exhaust Ventilation. This will be the working standard for the industry, and I would contribute to this work.
Skills Development & CPD - I would have various opportunities to develop and sharpen my skills through training courses, master classes, seminars and conferences. My development would be monitored, encouraged and developed.
Engineering Council - I would automatically be an affiliate member of CIBSE and have access to the resources that 20,000 members have developed over many years, ultimately including internationally recognised Engineering council qualifications CEng, IEng, EngTech etc.
Influence the Future of the LEV Profession - I would have a voice in government and legislative bodies via the Institute.
