From Education to Industry: A Dual Approach

Currently studying for her Higher National Certificate (HNC) in mechanical building services, Ella divides her time between college and working at Narbeths. This balance allows her to apply theoretical knowledge from her studies directly to real-life scenarios, strengthening her understanding and skill set. Her coursework covers essential subjects such as HVAC mechanical design, construction technology, REVIT, AI applications in construction, and the broader construction environment.

Upon completing her HNC, Ella plans to progress to university to pursue a BEng degree in mechanical building services, further solidifying her expertise in the field.

The Role of a Trainee Contracts Engineer

Working for a building services contractor, Ella collaborates with various professionals—including design teams, clients, suppliers, contractors, and sub-contractors—to ensure project success. The role is dynamic and fast-paced, offering exposure to industrial, residential, and commercial projects. Her responsibilities range from project coordination and cost management to technical problem-solving and compliance checks.

What makes the job particularly exciting is the diversity of tasks and the constant learning opportunities. No two days are the same, and working alongside experienced engineers provides invaluable insights into the industry's best practices.

A Family Legacy in Engineering

Ella's passion for mechanical building services engineering was inspired by her family. With her father and grandfather both working as engineers, she was naturally drawn to the profession. A work experience placement with her father cemented her interest, leading her to pursue an apprenticeship that would provide hands-on industry experience.

The Benefits of an Apprenticeship

Reflecting on her four years in the industry, Ella firmly believes that an apprenticeship was the best entry route. The hands-on experience, combined with networking opportunities, has been instrumental in her growth. Through initiatives like the BESA NextGen Network, she has connected with like-minded young professionals, exchanging knowledge and supporting each other on their career journeys.

Ella also recognises the importance of attracting more young engineers to the industry. With evolving challenges such as the building safety act, net zero targets, and advancements in AI, the sector requires fresh talent to bring innovative perspectives and solutions.

Advice for Aspiring Engineers

If Ella could share one piece of advice with her younger self, it would be to seize every opportunity and never hesitate to ask questions. Learning from experience and seeking guidance from seasoned professionals has been pivotal in her development. Asking the right questions has enhanced her understanding, while embracing opportunities has helped her progress to where she is today.

Looking Ahead

As Ella continues her journey towards becoming a fully qualified mechanical building services engineer, her story serves as an inspiration for those considering a similar career path. With determination, curiosity, and a willingness to learn, she is proving that the future of the industry is in capable hands.

For those thinking about a career in engineering, Ella’s story is a testament to the value of apprenticeships, continuous education, and the power of networking. The industry is evolving, and young engineers like Ella are leading the way toward a more innovative and sustainable future.
