Joint BESA/CIBSE Patrons Technical Tour

⏰ 08:30-12:30

πŸ“ Port Edgar Shore Road, South Queensferry

The Old Naval Barracks at Port Edgar date back to 1917 when they were built to support the UK’s First World War effort. After the war they were re-purposed as a training facility for the Royal Navy and later played a major part in preparations for the Normandy Landings during WW2.

They continued to be used as a naval facility before falling into disuse in the 1980s. The buildings are dilapidated but retain their original historic shape and character. They command a spectacular position directly under the new Forth Road Crossing and close to the original road bridge and the iconic Victorian rail crossing.

Lar Housing Trust is a charity, which specialises in taking derelict sites and transforming them into mid-market rental properties to help people struggling with unaffordable rents secure a long-term home.

Port Edgar is set to be one of their most impressive developments as it will retain much of the original character of the barracks while providing 49 apartments situated on the Queensferry shore. There are also plans for a cafΓ© and museum on the site plus overnight rental accommodation in the old prison block!

As well as the development, however, Lar has made the site available to Edinburgh University which was seeking a suitable venue to carry out research into a groundbreaking approach for extracting heat from sea water for use as a renewable source for small-scale heat networks.

During our planned visit, the University’s Seawarm team will demonstrate their heat pump, test rigs and research results. They are very keen to hear the views of BESA and CIBSE Patrons members and to share their findings.

The tour will begin with breakfast close to the site and will conclude with a Q&A and shared feedback session with BESA technical director Graeme Fox, and senior management from Lar and Seawarm. Depending on numbers, we will look to organise an informal lunch for any wishing to stay on a bit longer.

This event is free to attend for BESA members and CIBSE Patrons.
