The BESA Competence Assessment Standard provides independent assessment of our members’ technical competence and commercial capability.
Members must meet industry compliance, regulatory, legal and technical requirements through assessment of their competence. This guarantees clients' peace of mind that contractors delivering their projects are technically competent, have a skilled workforce and deliver high-quality services.
Through a simple but rigorous process, BESA validates all members by scrutinising business management capability, workforce competence and technical compliance.
Successful completion of BESA’s Competence Assessment Standard is mandatory for membership and ensures that as a BESA member you can demonstrate that you work to the highest standards.

The BESA Competence Assessment Standard is straightforward.
New members are assessed on joining and at the end of their first year. Following that, assessment is done every 3 years to monitor and re-verify competence or more frequently if required.
BESA will be conducting all assessments remotely until further notice. It is important that we protect the health, safety and welfare of our members and our audit team, whilst continuing to maintain confidence and trust in the marketplace for BESA members.
