BESA Industry Awards

The BESA Industry Awards are open to members and and the wider industry. They celebrate excellence in building services, and each year we look forward to rewarding the most talented apprentices and forward-thinking businesses and individuals, responsible for delivering innovative projects and products that showcase new initiatives and demonstrate quality within the sector.

The BESA Industry Awards start at our regional award dinners with winners from each region going forward to our finals taking place on the 12 October 2023 at Hammersmith's Novotel London West.

In addition to our apprentice and regional categories we also have additional categories which are competed for at a national basis only.

Some categories are only open to BESA members and some open to the wider industry.

2023 Categories - regional apprentice categories

The following categories recognise the excellent skilled apprentices within the building services industry. The winners from each region will then be shortlisted, and stand the chance of becoming the overall apprentice category winner at the final industry awards on the 12 October.

  • It takes 2 minutes to enter using our online form, just enter your contact details.
  • Once you have submitted your form you will be invited to sit an online test once the closing date passes. The test is completed remotely from any location.  
  • The final scores from the system will decide the winners
BSE Technician / Project Engineer Apprentice

BESA Contractor of the Year - BESA MEMBERS

Who can enter:

This award is for a BESA member who has completed contracting job/project within the past 12 months. 

 Key areas the judges are looking for: 

  • Details on the size and value of the job. 
  • Details of the scope of work. 
  • Examples of client management and collaboration directly related to the contract. 
  • How you coped with any challenges faced on site. 
  • How you upheld the BESA standards of membership and used BESA member companies wherever possible throughout the lifespan of the job. 
  • Contact details of a referee for reference. 
Small Budget Project of the Year…under £500,000 - BESA MEMBERS

Open to BESA members - UK projects with a budget value under £500,000, that have achieved practical completion, or equivalent by March 2023  

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Evidence of client satisfaction
  • Project excellence
  • Health and safety performance
  • Sustainability
  • Completion on time / early and to budget
  • Supply chain best practice and innovation. 

This category celebrates the best of building services, and the entry should reflect that.

Big Budget Project of the Year…over £500,000 - BESA MEMBERS

Outstanding Service Award - BESA MEMBERS

Training initiative of the Year - open to all

This award is for an employer who has started, still ongoing or culminated an outstanding training initiative over the past year. 

Key areas the judges are looking for:  

  • What was the initiative about 
  • Who delivered the initiative 
  • Why did you introduce the initiative - recruitment, upskilling or contractual obligations 
  • Did it involve establishing apprenticeships within your company 
  • Was training provided to support apprenticeships 
  • Did the initiative improve efficiency and productivity of your workforce 
  • What percentage of the workforce was trained 
Client of the Year - open to all

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

Clients have an important role to play in transforming the way the industry operates. How projects come to market has a significant impact on the ability of the building services industry to provide innovative, whole life value-for-money solutions.    

Key areas the judges are looking:

Judges are looking for a client that demonstrates a winning approach to a number of the following attributes: 

  • Clear and consistent leadership of the supply chain. 
  • Specifying contractors following the correct competence and compliance 
  • A commitment to procurement based on quality, value and collaboration not just price. 
  • Real benefits for all parties, evidenced by objective measurement criteria such as KPIs. 
  • A positive impact on their organisation, the industry and the wider community and an approach which might be used elsewhere to support continuous improvement. 

2023 BESA INDUSTRY AWARDS FINAL

The following categories are competed for directly at a national level with no regional heats. Winners will be announced at the final industry awards night on the 12 October.
 
Specialist Groups Award for Excellence - BESA MEMBERS

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members from a specialist group.

This award will recognise an individual that has demonstrated an outstanding contribution and commitment to achieving high technical standards within their specialism. 

 Key areas the judges are looking for: 

  • A BESA member that has achieved a high level of excellence
  • Are meeting and exceeding clients’ expectations,
  • Demonstrated a significant contribution to the professionalism and commercial performance of their company
  • Actively spreading knowledge and best practice of their specialism within building services.  
  • Evidence based on leadership, commitment to best practice and implementation of advanced technology and processes.  
Net Zero Initiative of the Year - open to all

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

Projects or organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to the UK’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This commitment can take the form of delivering a project with strong net zero credentials, producing an innovative technology, process or methodology that advances net zero, or a wider initiative such as developing training or addressing corporate culture. 

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Reduction of emissions through design and construction measures, leading to reductions both in the build and operational phases of assets and demonstrating progress towards net zero. 
  • Use of sustainable materials and achievement of waste, materials and water efficiency performance during construction, through design and construction innovation. 
  • Assets which evidence their environmental performance matching or exceeding the design modelling and ratings. 
  • Details on how the project or organisation is industry-leading on the above with good potential for transferability. 
Technical Innovation of the Year - open to all

Who can enter:

This category is open BESA Members and the wider community

The judges are looking for a new or improved product, process project or smart technology whose technological characteristics are significantly different from before.

The product or process must be in place by Jan 2023.

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • A description of the key ways that your technical innovation  has been tested, trialled and proven to be 'fit for purpose'
  • An outline of how your technical innovation is being used to make a significant difference to the industry
  • Provide evidence of how your innovation and helped your supply chain make progress

Indoor Air Quality Initiative of the Year - open to all

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

This category is open to any anyone who has made a significant contribution to the health, well-being, and productivity of building occupants by working to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). 

Key areas that the judges are looking for: 

  • Evidence of exceptional work in one project, a series of projects, or through an innovative technical development or practice. 
  • A company or individual who has advanced the knowledge and understanding of IAQ by acting as an ambassador for the industry or investing in research and development, promotional work, or contributed to technical guidance. 
Building Safety Award - open to all

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

 

Key areas the judges are looking for:  

  • an organisation or industry initiative that has made a significant contribution to the building safety agenda

  • Entries should consider the current increased focus on the safety of building occupants and industry workers enshrined in new legislation, including the Building Safety Act

  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they place safety at the heart of their activities and fully understand their responsibilities to clients, the general public, colleagues and others

  • The judges will not just be looking for statements of intent, but real and concrete examples of how the winning organisation has embedded the new safety culture in all aspects of their work.

Distributor of the Year - open to all

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

Key areas the judges are looking:

  • A distributor that has demonstrated excellence in management, customer and supplier relations
  • Represents products well in the market
  • Evidence of industry/community contributions 
  • Competence of industry standards
  • Use of smart technology and innovations
  • Examples of how the organisation has embedded the new safety culture in all aspects of their work
  • An organisation who has demonstrated a commitment to the UK’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

 

Diversity and Inclusion Initiative of the Year - open to all

Who can enter:

Open to BESA members and the wider industry.

This award is open to companies who have introduced initiatives that help promote the role of women or encourage diversity and inclusivity in other ways, such as ‘neurodiversity’ or thinking differently. 

Key areas the judges are looking for:

  • Use of initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion 
  • Evidence to show the organisation's commitment to attract new diverse talent whilst encouraging and supporting existing diverse talent.
  • Evidence showing progress being made on sites, offices, and branches in improving inclusion in all its forms.

Regional and National categories - how to enter
  • Please enter using our online form found under each category
  • Read the criteria carefully and complete the online form accordingly
  • Deadline for all entries can be seen next to the corresponding award date
  • All entries are free of charge 
  • The judges will review entries online and you will be contacted if you make the shortlist.
  • All winners will be announced at the awards nights.
  • All Regional winners will automatically go forward and be shortlist to win at the final Industry Awards.
Apprentice categories - How to enter
  • It takes 2 minutes to enter using our online, just enter your contact details.

  • If a tie occurs a one to one professional discussion with  3 relevant questions will be held to determine the winner
  • Each regional finalist will go through to the final Industry Awards
  • The final Industry Awards will be based on the scores from the first test but in the place of a tie a panel professional discussion will be required
  • All years are open for entry – so a year one is welcome to try alongside a year 2 or 3 (depending on apprentice type)

How do I buy tickets to the awards?

Tickets will be on sale soon. Watch this space!

Can I buy tickets to the awards at the door? No we do not sell tickets on the door. All tickets need to be purchased in advance via the ticket booking page.
Do I need to print my ticket? No you don't need to, please just give us your name on arrival and we will welcome you with a glass of sparkling wine.
Is there step free accessibility? The Novotel has a lift which takes you to the floor of the event.
Do you have a special rate at the Novotel.
