The Background

As a leading provider of mechanical and electrical engineering services for the construction industry, AMEON has consistently remained at the forefront of industry developments through its commitment to continuous improvement. Their comprehensive range of services, including design, installation, maintenance, and project management for HVAC, plumbing, electrical power, lighting, fire detection, security, and data communications systems, has earned them a reputation for excellence.

When the Building Safety Act (BSA) was introduced as a landmark legislation to improve building safety standards in the wake of tragedies like the Grenfell Tower fire, Ameon proactively embraced the changes it would bring. Recognizing the significance of the Act and the need to equip their key personnel with the necessary knowledge, AMEON sought to prepare for the cultural shifts and supply chain compliance requirements mandated by the BSA.

As a BESA member for many years, AMEON recognised BESA's expertise in the principal policy areas of the BSA, and their commitment to staying on top of emerging secondary legislation and guidance. With BESA's active involvement in shaping key industry issues through close collaboration with the government, AMEON knew they had found the perfect partner to navigate the complexities of the BSA. They requested training to equip their staff for the changes.

The Solution

BESA responded to AMEON's request for training by creating a bespoke workshop tailored to their specific needs. The four-hour session, delivered to 20 AMEON staff at their head office in Blackpool, aimed to provide participants with a clear understanding of the legislation and its practical implications.

To set the context and understand the motives behind the Act, participants listened to a BBC podcast about the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and the cross-examination of key contractors involved. This powerful introduction laid the foundation for a hands-on session, where participants explored the implications of the BSA on their work practices.

Participants marked past projects based on communication, supply chain management, and specification, and then re-evaluated them under the new BSA guidelines. This exercise highlighted the changes needed for safety, competence, and compliance within their business and their supply chain.

Discussions around their current Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) process revealed the need for more stringent assessment of subcontractors' qualifications, competence, and evidence of safe working practices. AMEON recognised the importance of ensuring that subcontractors working on their projects have the right qualifications and can demonstrate their competence before starting work.

The Results

Through BESA's bespoke training workshop, AMEON's staff gained invaluable industry-led guidance on navigating the Building Safety Act's implications. They also have access to BESA's  Building Safety Act Hub, which is regularly updated with the latest guidance and regulations, ensuring they stay ahead of the curve without the need to trawl through government sites.

Additionally, AMEON receives BESA's Building Safety Act Newsletter, providing them with regular updates and valuable information to help them stay informed and compliant.

By leveraging BESA's expertise and resources, AMEON is successfully navigating the complexities of the Act, ensuring their continued commitment to excellence and safety in the construction industry.
