What do we mean by Clean Air and why is it so important?
Clean Air refers to the quality of the air which can be negatively impacted by air pollutants such as Particulate Matter such as PM10 & PM2.5, Carbon Monoxide and Mould to name a few. Air pollution is now linked to 43,000 deaths per year in the UK. The World Health Organization and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental threat to our health. We want you to share your time and knowledge with other industry professional, and help us work towards a healthier future.
Did you know on average we take 22,000 breathes a day, that's around 9,000 litres of air every day! The air you breathe affects every part of your body, from your lungs to your heart and brain, It is so important to take the steps to ensure the air we breathe is cleaner as it affects every part of our body!
What’s more, the air in our homes, offices, schools and factories is also contaminated - with polluted outdoor air as well as other impurities generated indoors. This known as indoor air quality, you can find out more in our Indoor Air Quality Resources.
Why It Matters: Who Is Ella Roberta?
Ella Roberta Adoo-Kissi-Debrah was born happy and healthy in 2004, and by the age of seven was diagnosed with asthma. Sadly in 2013, Ella passed away, and her death, caused by a severe asthma attack exacerbated by air pollution, which led to a landmark ruling recognising air pollution as a direct cause of death.
Her mother, Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, has became a prominent advocate for clean air, and the Ella Roberta Foundation was established in her memory. Rosamund has also been working alongside BESA as the honouree president of the Indoor Air Quality Group to raise awareness of the importance of Indoor Air Quality, and the Ella Roberta Foundation was established in her memory.
She had over 30 emergency hospital admissions between the first diagnosis of asthma and her death, just over two years later. Throughout her short life and illness, there had been no mention of air pollution being a possible factor in relation to her illness.
