Grey Man Engineering Could Do the Job. BESA CAS Proved It

How Linaker’s Member Pledge helped Grey Man Engineering move beyond prequalification paperwork, independently demonstrate its competence and strengthen its business.

The Challenge: Proving Competence, Not Simply Claiming It

Grey Man Engineering knew it could deliver quality work. The challenge was demonstrating that capability in a way that would stand up to increasing client and supply chain scrutiny.

The business already held recognised accreditations, including SafeContractor and SMAS. When Linaker mandated BESA membership through its commitment to the BESA Member Pledge, Grey Man Engineering initially questioned whether it would mean more cost, more paperwork and another similar assessment.

“Our initial reaction was probably the same as many businesses. We questioned whether it was something we actually needed. We already held recognised accreditations such as SafeContractor and SMAS, so we initially assumed the process would be very similar and would duplicate what we already had in place,” said Nicola Millard, Finance Manager.

Grey Man Engineering needed BESA membership to provide something different: practical value and credible evidence that it had the organisational capability and technical competence to deliver.

The Member Pledge in Action

The BESA Member Pledge is about major contractors leading change by bringing their best supply chain partners with them.

Linaker’s commitment gave Grey Man Engineering a clear route to join BESA and demonstrate its competence through the BESA Competence Assessment Standard (CAS).

This was not about excluding a trusted supplier or imposing another badge. It was about Linaker and Grey Man Engineering raising the bar together and building a stronger, more professional and more trusted supply chain.

From Paperwork to Proof

As Grey Man Engineering progressed through BESA membership, it discovered that BESA CAS was not another prequalification exercise. The assessment examined how the business operated, how competence was managed and whether its systems and procedures were being applied effectively.

“BESA CAS wasn’t simply about checking whether documents existed. It looked at how the business operates, the competence of our team and, most importantly, how we could evidence the standards we work to every day.”

The most important difference was the independent technical assessment of a completed project.

A BESCA Auditor reviewed Grey Man Engineering’s work alongside the supporting documentation, taking time to understand how the project had been managed and delivered.

“It demonstrated that the assessment wasn’t just about whether we had the right paperwork, but whether we could evidence how our systems and procedures had been applied on a real project.”

This is the BESA difference. Prequalification can establish whether a contractor has the required information. BESA CAS goes further by examining whether the business can provide real evidence of how it delivers technical work.

“Linaker was the first company to adopt the Member Pledge because we recognised early the value it brings to our business, our clients, and our supply chain. We lead by example, mandating BESA CAS across our partners to prove competence and protect client trust. For us, the Pledge is about leadership, minimising risk, and setting the benchmark for our industry.”

Real work. Real experts. Real proof.

Practical support, not box-ticking

Grey Man Engineering was supported by real BESA specialists throughout the process.

“The support from the BESA membership team was excellent throughout. Whenever we had questions, they were answered quickly and clearly, and we always felt supported rather than judged.”

The online portal also made it straightforward to understand what was required and submit evidence at each stage.

This turned what Grey Man Engineering had initially viewed as another accreditation exercise into a practical review of the business and its approach to competence.

Tangible benefits for Grey Man Engineering

Completing BESA CAS helped Grey Man Engineering to:

  • Independently demonstrate its organisational capability and technical competence

  • Give Linaker and other clients stronger evidence of its ability to deliver

  • Strengthen how existing good practice is recorded and presented

  • Identify opportunities to improve business processes and supporting evidence

  • Differentiate itself from contractors relying primarily on prequalification paperwork

  • Prepare more effectively for future client assessments and tender requirements

  • Access ongoing support from BESA’s industry specialists

  • Position itself for opportunities within increasingly competence-led supply chains

The value was not simply achieving BESA membership. It was being able to provide credible evidence that Grey Man Engineering had the people, systems and technical capability needed to deliver quality work.

The result: competence proven

Linaker’s Member Pledge created the commercial reason to begin the journey. BESA CAS gave Grey Man Engineering the independent assessment and practical support needed to complete it.

Grey Man Engineering entered the process concerned about duplication and cost. It emerged with stronger evidence, greater confidence in its systems and a more meaningful way to demonstrate its capability to clients.

“Don’t dismiss it because you already have other accreditations. That was certainly our initial view, but having completed the process, we’ve found that BESA CAS offers something genuinely different.”

For contractors that know they can do the job, the message is simple:

Competence should be proven, not assumed.

Prove your competence. Strengthen your business. Join BESA.
