ADVOCATING FOR SKILLS
Industry Representation at BESA: Advocating for Skills
At BESA, industry representation is a fundamental part of our mission. We strive to ensure that the voices of our members are heard on the key issues impacting the building engineering services sector, particularly in relation to the skills agenda. Our newly established Skills and Policy team is dedicated to advocating on behalf of our members, shaping industry standards, and influencing policies that affect the future of the workforce.
Championing the Skills Agenda
BESA is committed to making strong and effective representation on the wider Skills Agenda. Our goal is to ensure that industry requirements, challenges, and innovations are well understood and reflected in national and regional policies that shape the future of the workforce.
In collaboration with the Engineering Building Services Skills Authority (EBSSA), we’ve already made significant strides in representing the needs of our sector. Our involvement in the outputs from ‘Working Group 2’ demonstrates BESA’s proactive approach to addressing the skills challenges in building engineering services. This initiative focuses on improving and aligning the skills required for the evolving demands of the industry, ensuring that our members are well-positioned to succeed in a competitive market.
Developing Competency Frameworks
A major aspect of our industry representation work is the development of competency frameworks for various specialisms within the sector. In 2023, we began work with colleagues and BESA members from the Ductwork and Vent Hygiene sectors to establish comprehensive competency frameworks that reflect the specific requirements of these work types.
Throughout 2024, we will expand this work across the wider sector, developing similar frameworks for other critical areas of the industry. By doing so, we not only provide clear guidelines for employers and workers but also strengthen the sector’s position by advocating for a highly skilled, competent workforce.
Driving Positive Change for the Sector
Our commitment extends beyond individual frameworks and initiatives. We are dedicated to ensuring that our members’ interests are represented at all levels, influencing government policy, regulatory changes, and industry-wide standards. Whether it's addressing workforce development challenges, securing funding for training, or promoting the importance of skilled labour in the building engineering services sector, our lobbying efforts are designed to ensure that our members’ needs are at the forefront of the skills agenda.
By engaging with key stakeholders, including government bodies, industry groups, and educational institutions, we can be at the forefront of shaping the direction of policy that directly impacts the sector. We aim to be a powerful advocate for the industry, helping to create a future where skills are recognised, developed, and rewarded.
