James Black, Managing Director of Hestia Mechnical Building Services Ltd shares with us his story about how he first started out as an apprentice 22 years ago and now runs his own building services company.
How did you get into the building engineering services industry?
I started my apprenticeship when I was 16 years old with a company called Morton mechanical services. I was put forward for my initial interview by BESA (BEST) at the time and this is where my journey started.
What does a typical working day involve?
No day is ever typical, each day brings a new challenge from surveying new projects, liaising with clients, organising materials, organising our work force and anything else that comes our way.
What is the best aspect of your job?
Working with our fantastic team and clients and overcoming every challenge we are faced with.
What do you find most challenging about your role and the industry?
Long days and long nights. As a young company a working day starts for me at 6am and ends when the day’s workload is done.
What is your greatest achievement to date?
Taking the huge step to leave the comfort zone of a well-paid job and establish Hestia mechanical Building services back in 2018.
What advice would you give someone looking to do an apprenticeship or a career change in our industry?
Go for it! Contact BESA and local companies and chase the opportunity, don’t let any rejections hold you back, keep hunting.
We currently have 2 adult trainees who are now doing full apprenticeships at Edinburgh college (1 in first year and one in second year) and progressing extremely well. We also have 2 plumbing apprentices (1 in second year and 1 in third year) We have fantastic engineers who are training the guys to an extremely high standard.
Thanks James, you can find out more about Scottish Apprenticeship Week here.
